Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- Are you having fun with our wintertime nature exploring?
We are glad you're along for the journey.
Have you ever noticed that during the warmer times of the year, we see lots of birds chirping and flying around but when wintertime comes around, many of the birds seem to disappear because they migrate to the warmer places for the winter season but why and how do the birds that stay around for the winter survive the cold winter months?
Let's check in with our friend Joshua from Five Rivers MetroParks to find out more.
- Winter is a great time to create a bird feeding station especially when you got snowy weather like this.
Now, all the birds in this little neighborhood right here are out surrounding my house, they know how to survive the winter.
They got the tools and the knowledge to find food that's out here but through helping them out a little bit at this bird feeding station, I can bring the birds right close to our picture window where we can explore birds for days and have endless fun.
Now, you don't have to get fancy.
A simple bird feeder hanging from a tree will work.
Here at my house, I put a post in the ground and nailed a few boards on top to hold seed.
All kinds of birds and squirrels treat this as their dinner table.
Since some birds feel more comfortable on a feeder, I hung up a seed feeder below.
And finally, just to add a different kind of food source, I added this suet feeder, bird seed melted into animal fat.
This stuff is great for bringing in woodpeckers.
So as you can see, setting up your own bird feeding station is quite easy and can be done right outside a picture window or even outside your bedroom and why not your school?
How much fun would it be to study science or art through watching birds?
So get outside and set up your bird feeding station today.
Take care.
- Thanks, Joshua.
The bird feeding station you showed us was really cool and a great way to attract and watch birds in the winter.
With the next link on this page, you can learn how to make a simple pine cone bird feeder to hang from a tree.
