Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- Working at a warehouse has changed how I viewed myself.
I always thought I wanted a desk job, I thought that would be cushy and comfortable but I actually really enjoy working with my hands, moving around a lot, being on the floor, making sure that the work gets done.
I prefer that now more than ever.
(upbeat music) My name is Oyyra Serrano and I work in supply chain as a DTC technician for Procter & Gamble.
(upbeat music) I've been with P&G three and a half years.
My career at the mixing center evolved from being a driver, on the floor, transporting materials to the production line to leading a small team of drivers, and then eventually into e-commerce where we were doing orders to be sent to people's homes.
(upbeat music) Through High school I was interested in the medical field like nursing, As I got into college, I thought about teaching, social work.
My experience at college there was this pressure to know exactly what you wanted to do when you're a freshmen.
And I just honestly didn't know.
So, I decided just to save my money, to save my time and work, and get real life experience.
(upbeat music) I'm originally from Bronx, New York, born and raised.
I worked in the South Bronx, I worked in Harlem, worked in the different communities in those areas.
So a lot of my work was administrative.
You know writing letters, calling people?
Eventually I found myself at a accounting firm.
It was a really great opportunity, but all I could see myself doing there was just staying in administrative assistant.
I didn't see where my growth could go.
And so, I didn't find a lot of fulfillment in that situation Just to be near her and also to get a different experience from this city.
I moved to Ohio in 2015.
I did not have a plan as to what kinda work I was gonna find.
But I figured since my last role was an admin role I should look into administrative assistant jobs in my area.
And I wasn't very happy with the wages, so I decided to look into something else.
(upbeat music) I applied for a technician role and I didn't have any forklift training so they provide that for you.
They have an external who comes in and does the training.
One thing that surprised me by I working at the mixing center was, yes, there's a very physical aspect to the role.
I'm on a forklift, I'm moving things around but there is an opportunity to learn computer skills.
The future of supply chain and logistics is a lot of digitalization.
It's not just about front work or getting the job done, it's also about automating these roles.
So, they don't wanna eliminate jobs they just wanna change the way we get it done.
And that means there's an opportunity for the technicians that are on the floor to learn these new skills.
When I first moved to Ohio, I did have a couple of jobs and Procter & Gamble has pretty much doubled my salary.
Procter & Gamble also has really great benefits and that I appreciate the most.
In the beginning, I was mostly curious and not really sure what I wanted to do next but now I have a much clearer vision of where I want to go.
And the great thing about it is that even if it changes, that's okay because there's so many opportunities within supply chain.
So, I'm pretty confident that whatever I decide to do I'll find it and it'll make me happy.
