Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- Hello again.
I'm Ava, a youth camp counselor and program volunteer at Five Rivers Metro Parks.
You may remember me from the summer Nature Camp.
Well, now we're back for some winter adventure too.
So, let's go explore the outdoors.
Even when there's no snow on the ground, the winter weather can be pretty cold so it's important to dress really warm when we explore and play outside.
All we need to do is wear the right kind of clothes and gear, make sure we're drinking enough water.
If it's sunny, we gotta remember sunscreen.
Yep, even in the winter.
And we need to watch our time and take breaks by going back inside and warming up.
Not to mention that's a good excuse to drink more hot chocolate, right?
Hey, let's see what our friend Angie has to say about what to wear when we're outside in the winter weather.
Angie works with our park system as an outdoor recreation coordinator, so she knows a lot about keeping warm while exploring nature.
- To be comfortable when we're spending time outdoors, we wanna make sure that we're dressed in layers.
So, we'll start with a base layer, like what I'm wearing now.
That's a little bit tighter fitting to your body and preferably not cotton.
So, a synthetic or wool material that will help wick sweat away from your body.
And my feet are pretty cold so I'm gonna start with putting on some socks.
Ah, that's better.
So, with my socks, I also wanna avoid cotton if possible and wear a synthetic or wool sock to help keep my feet nice and warm.
Next, I'm gonna put on some pants.
A simple pair of hiking pants works great over my base layer for most conditions.
But if it looks like it's gonna snow, I might add on a different layer.
These snow pants are great for sledding or playing out in the snow because they provide a lot of insulation.
Again, layered over top of that base layer.
But looks like I need something warm to wear on top as well.
My warm layer is a fleece and a down jacket and this gives me options.
If it warms up, I could take one off.
Again, layers are really versatile to keep me comfortable no matter the conditions.
Next up, my head is a little cold in my hands so I need to add some outer layers as well.
That's better.
Now my head and fingers are nice and warm.
The last thing I need is something for my feet.
So, I'm gonna put on snow boots to finish my outfit.
So, this is a great outfit to go play in the snow, but maybe on a day that it's a little bit warmer out or looking rainy, I might choose some other options like my rain gear.
So, this outer layer is really great because it's protecting me from the elements, both the wind and the rain, if it's looking rainy in the forecast.
The point of layering is, you wanna make sure you're comfortable in any condition so you can mix and match and take off layers to stay comfortable while you're playing outside.
There's lots of options out there.
