Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- [Narrator] Having outdoor skills like knowing how to build a fire are important when you spend a lot of time outside, especially in the winter.
But fires can be dangerous.
So always have an adult present when building a winter bonfire.
And remember the safety rules.
- Building a fire is a great way to stay warm when it's cold outside.
Start by working with a grownup to find an appropriate location for building your fire.
Make sure that there's nothing hanging over or around the fire that could catch.
A great place to build a fire is in a designated camp fire ring or fire pit, like this one right here.
One thing I always make sure I have by my fire before I get started is some water for safety and to be able to put it out when I'm done.
So I'm gonna go collect some wood and we'll be right back to get started.
(foliage rustling) (laughs) (chattering) So there's several different styles of starting a fire.
This is kind of a TP style.
I like to use one big log, start with the smallest stuff first and slowly build up around it.
(lighter strikes) (fire crackling) (fire crackling) - [Team Member] We're gonna go from adding tiny pieces on to (team members chattering) - And once you get your fire going it can be fun to roast a marshmallow or cook over it.
