Joe Polaniecki was born in Southwestern Poland and his family fled east when the Nazis invaded their town. They wound up in an area controlled by the Russians and were sent to Siberia. His family survived the war and then wound up in a Displaced Peoples Camp before moving to Belgium, where he met his wife Doris, who was also a survivor. In 1951 – when Doris was pregnant – they moved to Cincinnati.
